A poster, or in proper Norwegian, plakat, is a printout of a printed motif.
Historically, posters have been used in schools as an educational tool, as advertising or propaganda. But more and more, posters are being used as an interior product that we hang on the wall. Posters have become as popular as traditional pictures or art.
How did posters come about?
Chromolithography is a unique method of creating color prints. This method was invented by Godefroy Engelmann and patented in 1837. And it didn't take long before many people discovered the great possibilities that posters had to offer.
Frenchman Jules Chéret used chromolithography and in 1858 printed his first color poster. He quickly earned the nickname "the father of posters" and one of his favorite motifs was women's struggle for independence. According to The Vintage News, this marked the beginning of the use of posters as a work of art.

The poster took over the United States
In the years that followed, posters would spread throughout the world. In the United States , Edward Penfield was nicknamed "the man who brought posters to America." He was best known for creating advertising posters for Harper's.
Posters and posters today
Posters are still used for advertising, propaganda, and in schools. But most of all, most people probably associate a poster with something you hang on the wall at home.
Who doesn't remember from their youth when they wallpapered their children's rooms with posters of pop stars, football players or boy bands?
